This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

I have not heard this extended version.

The album version, which takes up almost all of side 4 of Shaft, clocks in at 19 minutes. We're about 8 minutes from entering uncharted territory and staying there for a bit

totally far out, far out for Hayes too, whose psych excursions always have a kind of baroque tightness no matter how cosmically sprawling. this is a bumpy ride into unknown regions

You'd think a record dubbed "exotic sounds of Bali" would include sounds exotic from the perspective of Bali, e.g., Telemann's Tafelmusik or Herman's Hermits outtakes or something.

The beginning of this reminded me of Tom Waits' middle period.

thanks J-K, and so long. yuletide wishes and whatnot
Avatar 8:37pm

I can not stop spinning!
  8:38pm
Dean:

I'm ashamed to admit that my conscious introduction to Gamelan--I must have heard the Nonesuch recording before this, but I don't remember the occasion--was a recording I purchased almost solely for the cover, which features a young and topless Balinese woman with whose image I was smitten. The program was a Gamelan and a Ketjak. I have since acquired more than a handful of Balinese recitals, none for the visuals.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:40pm

I might have been exposed to a bit of gamelan in a movie before hearing Tom (Year of Living Dangerously?).

Avatar 8:45pm
geezerette:

WOW!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:46pm
melinda:

@hyde: I haven't seen it in a long time but probably worth re-watching. I liked it a lot too. Linda Hunt portraying a male character was a really bold move at the time, too.
Avatar 8:47pm
Flash Strap:

Some of Vangelis' best work is on that score. I like the score about ten times more than I like the movie, though I'm a little hard on Peter Weir since he never did a film as good as Picnic at Hanging Rock again

similarly, love the score of Gallipoli, not crazy about the film.

Great cinematography in both though
Avatar 8:48pm
hyde:

i confess that i think The Last Wave is better than Picnic. though i love both movies.
Avatar 8:48pm
Flash Strap:

Linda Hunt is really good, yeah. wow is she good
Avatar 8:49pm
Flash Strap:

well, shit. I haven't seen The Last Wave. Never could get ahold of it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:49pm
melinda:

It was a departure from Picnic at Hanging Rock, true. I think I saw Picnic later, though. Even more of a departure was....Witness. Last Wave, yes! Might be my fave of the three.
Avatar 8:50pm
hyde:

holy heck. man. you have to see The Last Wave!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:50pm
melinda:

You gotta see The Last Wave! It must be somewhere.
Avatar 8:52pm
Flash Strap:

I will, I will! Always wanted to.

you know, i attribute this partly to lowered expectations (and never having read the source material), but I actually really like Master & Commander, in a way
Avatar 8:53pm
Flash Strap:

Oh hell, and I haven't seen Mosquito Coast, which seems pretty essential, whether it's good or not
Avatar 8:55pm
hyde:

i do also think his Hollywood movies are a bit of a step down from Last Wave and Picnic, but there's still a lot there. Witness is fine. Mosquito Coast is sort of underrated and pretty good. Fearless i really like. Truman Show and Dead Poets are really interesting for Hollywood movies.

it's a drag that after Master and Commander he sort of dropped out.
Avatar 8:57pm
Flash Strap:

i agree on all points there, Hyde.
Avatar 8:59pm

this is such a cool piece. you can read notes on it here: buhrecords.bandcamp.com...

"Intestinal wars"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03pm
Dave in Vermont:

Just tuning in. I just watched The Way Back the other day - mostly because I saw Peter Weir's name.
It was ambitious but not that well directed. Or maybe I missed the point of the style. The story was decent but I felt it should have been more moving.
It based on a true story of a Pole who was accused of being a spy in post WWII Poland and sent to Siberia, who then ended up leading an escape, which ended up taking the survivors over the Himalayas into India.
Avatar 9:04pm
Flash Strap:

So it reads in Flores' own notes, and I hope it is not a typo
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:04pm
melinda:

I remember liking Witness when it first came out. Then I saw a film of John Waters' one-man stage show in which he recounts a story of a couple who were so offended by one of his films that they called the cops about it. He said if they can call the cops on his movie he reserves the right to call the cops on the barn raising scene in Witness. I guess its blatant and contrived feel-goodyness was equally offensive to him, which I found hilarious and I haven't been able to take it seriously since then. The rest of the movie is probably ok.
  9:04pm
Dean:

I mean, I can relate, particularly if the reference is to Lima beans, but the concept kinda distracts from the vibe.
  9:05pm
Dean:

I'm guessing "internecine" might be the intended term.
Avatar 9:06pm
hyde:

@melinda hahahaha. i liked that movie (but haven't seen it since 1985), but i totally get that. it is a really self serious piece, as i remember it. still, i saw it twice when it came out.
Avatar 9:07pm
hyde:

@Dave in Vermont huh, interesting. thanks for the review!
Avatar 9:07pm
geezerette:

Dean,that's what I thought.
Avatar 9:07pm

I like to think he's relating a primeval state of society to the viscera of the body, the sort of thing the surrealists or Burroughs would do. You might be right about internecine, though

Really like and appreciate The Truman Show and Witness is a movie I have always liked, though there are some overly sentimental Hollywood moments like the barn-raising and the scene where he convinces her to dance to the radio. Haven's seen Picnic... in a very long time but remember being enthralled by it. Thanks all for the tip on The Last Wave which I just added to my Netflix queue.

Avatar 9:30pm

@Flash Cassavetes is such an amazing figure. I saw Gloria for the first time not too long ago. That movie is genius.

The Colombo he directed (Etude in Black) is one of my faves, too. Those two acting against each other is *spectacular*.

I met Peter Falk at UCLA in '84 during the Olympic Arts Festival. It was a performance by Piccolo Teatro di Milano of The Tempest in Italian. He was in the audience, and the person with whom I attended the show had long before purchased one of Falk's paintings, so he felt obligated to speak with him. I was fairly blown away by the play.
