This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Evening, Explorers! Tonight we look back at a year in the Explorers Room; I will play one song each from every show of 2016 (with the exception of some of the more recent shows, where I'll switch it up with some alternates).

Playlist images are my notebook (my second since starting), where I plan playlists and make notes

This was one of my favorite shows of the year. Man, just a whole 3 hours with Eddie Harris. Yes
Avatar 7:48pm

this is one of those classic Eddie Harris songs, where there's an overdrive switch that gets hit and it all just flies away from the planet at top speed. Livin' for that moment, sometimes

In an intro to a radio story the other day on new attentions and developments in the hula tradition, the news anchor said
"Hula dancing is alive and well, and not just on your car’s dashboard."
I thought that was an annoying bit of idjit writing.

Hi b/p! I agree, I hate that kind of thing with fire

Here's another groaner from a while back -- a year or two ago, not 50 or 75 years -- regarding sumo:
"To the untrained eye, they may look like pudgy giants in underwear shoving each other around a ring."

...saw him w/ a local pick up band when I lived in Santa Barbara. He made them sit out - & shamed the drummer just by doing rhythms by *clicking the keys/stops* on his sax. All w/out a word. It was something to witness. Not long after he played in town again - ill & very diminished. Then he soon passed away.

With women, Kissinger would underline his perspective on power being the ultimate aphrodisiac by saying, "You know the Bee Gees wrote a song about me."
Avatar 9:31pm

I can't believe we still hear people talk about Kissinger like he's not a top-tier war criminal. Every politician we have to choose from, on both sides, seems to feel compelled to kiss his ring

probably because the Bee Gees wrote the sexiest imaginable song about the devastation he's wrought upon the earth
