@Uncle Michael: nice one. @Revolution Rabbit: love that you tak the time to use the ascii character in "wh♂"

Complete Control is such an insider song, and comes across so clearly. So much anger. So much rock.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Clash's 1st album - in my Top20 Albums ever. Kind of surprisingly...
  9:33pm
Stevel:

My first Clash album was Give ''em Enough Rope, like many midlanders, I'd suppose. First US release (?)
  9:36pm
JakeGould:

@Stevel: Ha! Thanks for the term, “Insider Song.” Was actually thinking of such songs today; things that reference some kind inside baseball or band issue that almost nobody knows or cares about.

Like Ramones’ “KKK Took My Baby Away” or even Elvis Costello’s “Radio Radio”
  9:36pm
Stevel:

First name was spelled "Hughie" on Edmund's Repeat When Necessary.

Jake. Yeah, they're not always the best songs, but they're usually interesting. "EMI, by Sex Pistols, for example.

It took him a while to find himself.
  9:40pm
JakeGould:

@Stevel: Yeah, the songs seem to me to be excuses for fans to lecture other fans on true song meanings. For example, I cannot ever listen to “Radio Radio” with just joy anymore thanks to the song’s subtext being hammered into my head over the years.

Also, Hughie sounds like a deli man. Huey sounds like a duck.
  9:40pm
eye in the sky:

Interesting Clover spin-off band named SVT. Jack Cassidy on bass with Brian Marnell on lead and vocals. Good power pop trio. Had a Bay Area hit with "Heart Of Stone". Marnell went on to Jim Carroll band right before he ODed.Sad affair. Check SVT out. Good band.
  9:41pm
Stevel:

I've never heard the back stories on KKK or RR. Please don't feel obligated to tell them!

Tornadoes last night (nothing much broken around here) snowing sideways tonight. Fucking lovely weather. Dogs didn't care.

Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Punk was such a small & particular scene in those earliest days; by the time the Pistols' album was out late '77, that scene was already over for the insiders! Took a while for TheClash to get out too - & even longer yeah to get out in thuh U.S.A. ...
'RadioRadio' is eternally true, tho' - Corporate Formats now more than ever...

Yes - in SVT - that's the JeffersonAirplane's/HotTuna's Jack Cassidy - who played on 'ElectricLadyland' w/ Hendrix.

I hate to run counter to the culture, but the Clash were bigger posers than the Pistols. I'm a Clash fan but they were careerists. Strummer veered from the 101'ers course to the Clash becaue he saw the importance of following fashion. All the political sloganeering in the world doesn't change the fact that they were guys trying to make a good living making music. Why this should be a crime, I have no idea.

Poseur is a dumb accusation. (To me.) Maybe I think The Damned, or even worse, 999, were poseurs, but that accusation is in my head. Music is the key. (And, of course, my involvement in music is also in my head. But I can try to involve you in my head...)

I first saw the Clash in ? '80 ? Fliers on telephone poles said " The Only Band That Matters" at Temple Beautiful. Great show! Bill Graham told the band he had exclusive rights to all Bay Area shows so they said fuck you and did this one off. Negative Trend opened. Google Clash + Temple Beautiful to see pictures!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Wull...like PeteTownshend said his original idea of TheWh♂ was an ArtSchool idea he had - that they would be a Pop band but 'strap dynamite on themselves' & self-destruct very quickly...but then, kids responded strongly to his songwriting...& the royalty checks came in - & he got diverted! The Pistols were like a band sticking to his original conception (...whether every member really wanted to live that destiny exactly or not...) - & TheClash were more like a band that understood what Pete learned later from the beginning...but they didn't last very long either, really. (& only that 1st album is - completely like that 1st album.) Identity crisis is right there in the names of both TheWh♂ & Clash - & I think TheClash were pretty up front about being Poets of that condition - not the people w/ Thuh Answer...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...yerknow - in a rockumentary - they ask Bowie if he was threatened by Punk - & he says - no - they all wanted so badly to be RawkStars...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15pm
Uncle Michael:

he'd know about that
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I would credit Lydon w/ understanding the limitations of being a RawkStar - a lot more than an awful lot of people who could've benefited from that...

Loving the Clifton Chenier. Speaking of Bayou Country, anyone catch Scharpling last night talking about how Fogerty occasionally sings with a drawl, but was born and raised in Berkeley, CA?

Fogerty deliberately did that, so that he could pretend to be from the south

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43pm
chris_in_space:

@Scraps, I should have mentioned that he contrasted his note about Fogerty with Elvis, who didn't use the accent, and was from Memphis. I think the word in question was "born"; or "boyne", as in "boyne on the Bayou"
Avatar 10:49pm
Scraps:

By the time Fogerty was trying for success, being from the south was cool, whereas in Elvis's time, you sung with an midAmerican accent if you wanted to be taken seriously. If you sung with a southern accent, you ended up forced into blues or country

@scraps at least after 10+ years, rock was more of a thing, and it was in garages across the nation. Perhaps any sort of identity–be it regional, racial, spiritual, etc–was just part of the progression of making pop music.
