This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Hi David D! What's the gist, if I may?

That must have been cool, Carm
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:09pm
David D:

Yes, you may! If there is any more to come, I will listen more closely and try to retain it...
Avatar 7:11pm

there's no more to come, I'm afraid. that was just a brief excerpt from the end of a half hour piece

Well I could listen again later - I was busy doing my post-show stuff.
Avatar 7:14pm

Don't sweat it David D!

as is the case with most of the stuff tonight, but not all, we have Conrad Plank in the mix somewhere on these first tracks. He's all over the scene

I feel like I've been on another planet when I listen to this show...never know A THING about all the music. That's a good thing, I suppose, love hearing and learning about new stuff, but not so good for the self image...

When I listen to this show I always wish this room was a physical room decorated with Flash Strap's collage art all over, and we can all physically walk into it to sit together just listening to the music.

@Mayuko: if only you could see the room I broadcast from, because you basically just described it
Avatar 7:35pm

Hi Hyde!

Don't worry, Doc Jazz, it gives me so much pleasure to play something and have it be NEW to someone. I thank you, I thank you (plus, you know a ton about a ton)
Avatar 7:35pm
Flash Strap:

that track was recorded live in a decommissioned German train station
Avatar 7:38pm
Flash Strap:

Harmonia is such a Good Band, my god
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:38pm
doctorjazz:

Watussi is very cool (though I don't think I could dance the Watusi to it).
Avatar 7:39pm
hyde:

the best decommissioned German train station action i've ever seen is in The Train with Burt Lancaster
Avatar 7:39pm
Flash Strap:

you can't if you don't try, Doc!
Avatar 7:40pm
Flash Strap:

Never seen that one Hyde, is it a good flick or just a good decommissioned German train station?
Avatar 7:40pm
hyde:

@doctorjazz the drum part in The Watusi is maybe my favorite drum part ever
Avatar 7:42pm
Flash Strap:

now that I'm thinking of it, it would be just insanely cool to see someone do a durational watusi to Watussi
Avatar 7:42pm
hyde:

@Flash it's an *amazing* flick. Arthur Penn was directing it, but then he basically got fired. John Frankenheimer took over. Highly recommended.
Avatar 7:44pm
Flash Strap:

whoa cool I should watch it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:44pm

Time to take the show on the road (to the car for the drive home), thanks as usual, Flash! (Veterano is really cool as well, got me some record shopping to do).
Avatar 7:44pm

ok now we're about to spend some Quality Time with Zuckerzeit
Avatar 7:45pm

it's fantastic. Lancaster is over 50 at the time, but he does physical work in it that is just bonkers
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:46pm
doctorjazz:

(when you search Harmonia on Amazon, it is under "Krautrock")
Avatar 7:49pm
Flash Strap:

There are very few records I care for as much as this one. In its simplicity is a perfection almost unfathomable. I will proceed to play just slightly more material from it than I ought, considering how much stuff I have to get through tonight
Avatar 7:52pm
Flash Strap:

on an unrelated but equally obsessive note, I just got every Marx brothers movie on DVD, so I got that going for me
Avatar 7:53pm
geezerette:

Just got here,Evan and gang! Agree, the music is so pure and straight forward. I love good minimalism in any form.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:53pm
David D:

You'd think you'd hear more ""Krautrock" on German radio, but guess what...
Avatar 7:54pm
Flash Strap:

Hi Geezerette! So glad to have you on board tonight!
Avatar 7:55pm
geezerette:

Thanks Evan. Glad to be here!
Avatar 7:57pm
Flash Strap:

@DD: I have no idea what the contemporary German music lover's relationship to this stuff is... I know some cool cats who sort of write Can off as classic rock... I get it, but I don't get it. But this stuff hasn't been subject to the same oversaturation, I don't think, so who knows

Avatar 8:02pm
geezerette:

Hiya coel!
Avatar 8:02pm
Flash Strap:

you can hear the two sounds: Roedelius is lyrical, pastoral, tinkling like a toy box, very lovely, playful but precise; Moebius is rubbery and absurd, a little dubby, prone to dissonance and industrial sound
Avatar 8:02pm
Flash Strap:

Coelacanth! Hello friendo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:03pm
David D:

Well, there are surely plenty of people who listen to a variety of interesting stuff (and some even to WFMU streams!) just like anywhere else. But you will almost never hear this sort of thing broadcast, except if someone like me plays it on local community radio.

so David, of course i could guess -and of course i could be wrong - what is on most radios in germany? mainstream? college? "underground"?
Avatar 8:10pm
Flash Strap:

ok back on track... sorry had to cut that one short

only so many minutes in five hours!
Avatar 8:13pm
Flash Strap:

I've always been medium enthusiastic about Guru Guru but Neumeier is such a great drummer it's insane. If you make it to the end of the show, there's a crazy track with him from 1983 I hope to fit in
Avatar 8:13pm
northguineahills:

(Steps into the room), w00hoo! Most of the tracks are already clicky-starred for me! This is gonna be fun already!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:16pm
David D:

Most radio in Germany is very, very commercial and mainstream. There are one or two cultural stations with classics and a variety of jazz and some interesting stuff as well, but usually with long, long reports on various issues in-between. And then there are local community stations like the one I'm at (right now in fact), where you can hear whatever the show hosts want to play or say.
Avatar 8:16pm
Flash Strap:

Hi NGH!

If I recall correctly, I think I played an early live version of this track on the recent Motorik show
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:17pm
David D:

(I should have written "other interesting stuff as well".)
Avatar 8:18pm
Flash Strap:

do you do your WFMU broadcasts from such a station DD? I always thought it would be cool to finagle something like that as a streamer
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:19pm
coelacanth∅:

Thanks David. that's about what i thought, though maybe slightly more dismal than i'd hoped!
Avatar 8:21pm
Flash Strap:

at least they have community radio stations! those are not as abundant as they should be, stateside
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:22pm
David D:

Yes, I always broadcast from Radio Blau. Usually (though not tonight) I simulcast the first hour on FM radio here. Radio Blau then goes off the air to give way to another station on the same frequencies, while I continue on the stream from the same studio for another two hours.
Avatar 8:22pm
Flash Strap:

That's pretty cool D
Avatar 8:24pm
Flash Strap:

god this is a beautiful piece. this one melts ya down
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24pm
coelacanth∅:

- this makes me wonder though... i know the commercial stuff is at least pretty bad; but is it as absolutely unbearable as most and quite likely ALL the commercial stuff in the us?
(obviously an objective opinion!)
Avatar 8:24pm
geezerette:

Five hours will NOT be too much.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25pm
David D:

Yes, there are community stations, but not everywhere of course. It would be interesting to compare the situation here and in the States.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25pm
David D:

Yes, it is unbearable. I'd tell you how unbearable but I can't bear to listen so I don't really know.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:27pm

haha! okay. Thanks for indulging my curiosity.

David D; you're certainly in the right place now though.
Avatar 8:32pm
northguineahills:

@David D: So, not quite as bad as most American radio stations? Crap, in my listening area, only the two NPR stations are the only non-vomit-worthy stations on the air. Even the college stations were sold to Clear Channel in the early 90s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:37pm
coelacanth∅:

we can thank the machiavellian reagan administration for that.
there used to be a limit on how many radio stations one company may own.

i'm glad you did it, so we got to hear the story!
Avatar 9:33pm
Flash Strap:

this record is so cool. I like Okko Bekker on the saw even more than the sitar
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39pm
coelacanth∅:

the saw is a gorgeous instrument in the right hands. (ie, Okko Bekker... also the saw player on Joanna Newsom's "cosmia" on her 3-track ep)
Avatar 9:40pm
Flash Strap:

Two of these guys are from Kraan, a jazz-rock group in Germany. Asmus Tietchens is I guess sort of a proto industrial electronics guy. Okko Bekker is a weirdo who's most famous for an album of extremely psychedelic sitar covers, and we get the rare Plank instrumental performance
Avatar 9:40pm

saw is amazing, I agree

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45pm
coelacanth∅:

thank both of you! i'm going to look into this person.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45pm
David D:

This is lovely - I won't say which one since it applies to so much of the show.
Avatar 9:45pm
Flash Strap:

I hate when the only thing stopping you from finding a record is an inability to remember what it's called
Avatar 9:46pm
hyde:

since i couldn't even remember the name, i would say my gender assumption about Fang Teng Lee may also be worth doubting
Avatar 9:48pm
Flash Strap:

sad to report, it seems we have a fella: img.discogs.com...
Avatar 9:48pm
hyde:

@Flash that is a problem that is even worse, i think, with digital libraries. with an analog collection you might be able to use visual memory to get yourself to where you need to be. with digital, if you can't remember a name, you are toast
Avatar 9:49pm
Flash Strap:

totally
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49pm
coelacanth∅:

i have all (maybe) my albums and much of my other music roughly alphabetised in a notebook ; but because of that exact scenario decided to make a cross-reference using categories.
- i never finished it though.
Avatar 9:49pm
hyde:

welp, so i lost the name and got the gender of the player wrong. i still like the music!
Avatar 9:50pm

that is the key component, the rest is minutiae
