Ahhhh… One of the few old U2 songs I still can stand!!!

How's the "In Sound?" Some tonight?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05pm
Keith from Forest Hills:

Those first two U2 albums are kind of in a zone of their own.

Is it summer already?

Now comes the best part of this song.

Hi all, my friend named her black cat Dubh because of the song! And last wk's VVoice had a slag of U2, via Gina Arnold's blog, as told to us by Greil Marcus. Lemme find it...
  9:09pm
Stevel:

Still feel badly about passing up two chances to see Boy-era U-2. I should probably seek professional help.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10pm

Keith is correct about the best part of this song/these songs.

I hate to be a party pooper but here's the U2 thing from GM's Top Ten

4. Gina Arnold, “The Arms of America,” foolsrushinredux.blogspot.com (May 15)

On the opening of the Joshua Tree tour in Seattle: “U2’s stock in trade is how moral they are, it is the bedrock of their bullshit.”

I miss old U2
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13pm
coelacanth∅:

hello Evan & Funkies
...don't you know the fashion is to hate on u2?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15pm
Keith from Forest Hills:

Exactly, coelacanth∅. And that hate is decades old. That's why it is nice to step back to the pre-Boy era when they were just another one of the cool bands.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16pm
Keith from Forest Hills:

I meant to say pre-War era U2.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17pm
coelacanth∅:

yup - when boy was released it was considered punkrock and was a secret weapon at the dirt club. Everyone got on the dance floor.

...i saw u2 when "war" came out on a pier near battery park for about 6 bucks. they were fairly Amazing.
  9:19pm
JakeGould:

I like U2 before “Achthung Baby” came out… And then it as the beginning of the bloated Bono crap.
  9:20pm
JakeGould:

@KeithfromForestHills: “War” was my entry point into U2 so hey…
  9:20pm
herb.nyc:

Let the record state that Gina is doing all the hating. I'm simply doing all the muck raking.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22pm
Keith from Forest Hills:

@ JakeGould: Yes, I know. I liked it too, but I heard so many ads for it on commercial rock radio it made me lose U2 mojo. I was very sensitive to the message of the medium when I was in my late teens.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23pm
coelacanth∅:

even achtung baby has some good tracks; but that's about when i stopped paying attention....because they had been mostly boring me since war, and for no other reason. i never payed attention to whatever Bono was saying.
  9:25pm
JakeGould:

We can all agree that “Achtung Baby” was a fairly large dividing line, right?

I stopped liking U2 when i took a first date to see Rattle & Hum and I wore the worlds shittiest sweater. But thats just my own issue now that I think about it : )
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28pm
coelacanth∅:

haha! i'll have to look at the track listing! that era i only knew via 2nd generation cassette tapes.
Avatar 9:28pm
fleep:

Edge and his grandiose plan to fuck with pristine coastline is what did it for us. We haven't listened to a single track in years and we have a bunch.

I like “Rattle and Hum.” My friends liked “Rattle and Hum.”

you gotta airhorn while you do that efd
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32pm

well i just looked and i definitely like several tracks on zooropa...so i guess that's the last u2 that i'm familiar with.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35pm

They lost it with me after Actung Baby. That was such a great album

WOOOOOOO
  9:36pm
Danne D:

:)
  9:37pm
dbj:

That sounded more like a french horn
  9:37pm
Stevel:

Nothing says summer like ripping on a French horn!
  9:39pm
herb.nyc:

I wonder what "the sound of summer" would be like if U2 sang it?
Avatar 9:39pm
steve:

what is it? i guessed trombone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43pm
coelacanth∅:

i missed that completely. i had to relocate within this house to get away from foul smells in the kitchen! (probably foul)
...i did not know Earl Slick was releasing albums in the 70s. this is revelatory.
  9:45pm
Julie M Brooklyn:

For me, the sound of summer is Jonathan Richman. Just sayin'. I'm enjoying the show, though. Hi, Evan!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46pm
efd:

hi Julie! And hi everyone I was too busy to say hi to earlier. I see you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48pm
coelacanth∅:

anyway, (but not to dwell) considering i haven't listened to that tape (zooropa b/w achtung baby) i guess i can say they don't do much for me; but "daddy's gonna pay for your crashed car", and "the wanderer" (sung by Johnny Cash) are both great songs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50pm
efd:

for the record, I continued buying U2 albums up until The Joshua Tree so I guess I still liked them in the moment, but the only ones I still like now are Boy and October and some of War.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51pm
chad from oregon:

Also, Zooropa: French horn all over it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53pm
Keith from Forest Hills:

Joshua Tree was my workout tape in the late 80's. I had a per-recorded cassette, so you know it sounded kinda lousy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55pm
chad from oregon:

It's a shame that virtually everything by Earl Slick is out of print, even digitally. Only his great album Zig Zag from 2003-ish remains available. Zig Zag which includes a Bowie vocal on one track.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56pm
coelacanth∅:

joshua tree was the last one i bought as well; but i obtained the next 3 for free, which was the only reason i got them. (rattle & hum bored me to tears)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58pm
medson:

you're correct in the pronunciation EFD
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01pm
medson:

and goddamn i like this song
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08pm
coelacanth∅:

i've only heard one Earl Slick album - which {carefully inserts foot in mouth} i just confirmed is called "live '76".
- i can't say i like it that much, but i'm on a "how ya doin'" basis with Mr. Slick, who frequents the café i frequent and is close with some people i know - which is why it surprises me that i never knew he had a musical career outside studio work, before Bowie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13pm
efd:

whoa, that's pretty cool coel! Tell him The Evan "Funk" Davies Show (yes, all of us!) says hello next time you see him! :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm

haha i will, if you delete my comment that says i don't like the live album much!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26pm

well I can't delete it because it also has the part where you say you see him at the cafe! I can edit it though... :D

i've been subjected to some crappy tv show and couldn't listen for maybe an hour. it's like some occult/gangster action-adventure fantasy with all the uplifting drama of "law & order", great acting of csi miami and the gratuitous violence and thug aggrandizing of a steven seagal movie. it was painful, and i missed x-ray spex, but i made it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22pm

coelacanth∅:

Thanks Evan
Excellent program!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16am
coelacanth∅:

hey Evan i'd love to give Earl Slick your regards but i do also like the idea of you editing my post! as i said we just say hi - and i doubt he even knows i know the other people he knows (one being another Bowie guitarist)...so i'd hate to possibly begin a slightly greater level of acquaintance with my own embarrassment!
...the fact is i should've kept that opinion to myself; but i'm either stone quiet, or i'm a Blaaaaaabermouth! (+ i'm exhausted, as some of my other comments demonstrate)
so you edit that as seems appropriate and next time i see him i'll tell him you played his song, and whatever elkse you'd like me to say.

Great show! have a good night.
