This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

the theme of the show obviously is women & electronic music, but there's actually an almost unbroken string of power couples tonight. Priscilla & her husband Barton tend to work together, and this is on an album credited to both of them, but I think this track is all her. That's her above, 2nd from left

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:55pm

Flash, I totally understand your ambivalence about focusing on the work, apart, of women in this context. To me at least it's clear that you're not ghettoizing or diminishing anything

supposedly Bravo did a one hour doc on Paul Bley in the late 90's co-produced with Arte. (which is amusing/sad given what Bravo is now). as far as i know, you can't find it anywhere.
Avatar 8:03pm
Flash Strap:

yeah they were pretty intense collaborators in the late 60s/early 70's, married for a time. I think she pretty much wrote all his stuff from '64 on as well

Avatar 8:08pm

Paul Bley during this time basically IS Annette Peacock, to the point where it annoys me to enter his name in the artist field on this track
Avatar 8:09pm
Flash Strap:

huh, they were definitely married, weird wiki would omit that! The hell!

I live to make it hard for you to leave Doc!
Avatar 8:15pm

If you remember a few shows back, I played a long track by Bley&Peacock called M.J. This is a variation on that composition
Avatar 8:16pm

doctorjazz, i think you were skimming too fast on your way out the door. the Annette Peacock bio on wiki mentions that she was married to Paul Bley after Gary Peacock...

it's Ladies Night? Cool it guys, the chicks are here! *smooths back hair, checks breath*

Speaking of da ladies, any Laurie Spiegel on deck for tonight? Not sure if one of those pics is her. Or Wendy Carlos?
  8:19pm
doctorjazz:

Could be, I searched Bley and Peacock together, didn't look more. Sick of NPR depressing news, going to keep the show on with the phone app. No more posting, though...
Avatar 8:21pm
Flash Strap:

Mr. Fab! always so good to see you friend. No Laurie or Wendy tonight, but I'll probably get into both of them next week, when we'll do more astral traveling. This'll be a multi-show series. Love Laurie Spiegel SO MUCH
Avatar 8:26pm
Flash Strap:

It's so great how she runs her voice through a moog, just turning it up in the mix until unintelligibility
Avatar 8:28pm
Flash Strap:

after this, she took a 6-year hiatus. when she cam back, she was still devoted to pushing the songform to its edges but there's not so much in the way of synthesizers, so we'll just hear one track from her next album before we move on. That track: IS GOOD

I always group United States of America w/ White Noise, similar sound, and similar time period.

Back in 1999, a friend of mine found 30 United States of America cassettes at a Big Lots in FL. He bought them all for his record store, which is where I got my cassette (before I found an LP version).

Jacksonville is awful (the people), naturally beautifully, but awful. You'd think a town that size would have more going on. Sure there are a tiny handful of people trying to make things happen, but it seems like a loosing battle.
