Favoriting September 13, 2017: The start of a new WFMU schedule, so it's time for my annual tribute to Jim McIntyre, aka Jimmy Mack, my good friend from high school who was a lifelong influence on my musical taste

Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop-up player!

[photo via Kathy Moore] It's the first week of the new WFMU Fall/Winter/Spring schedule, and as I've done since my very first show on the weekly schedule back in 2006 I'm dedicating this show to my high school friend Jim McIntyre, also known as Jimmy Mack.

Jim's passion for music - and radio, for that matter - was overpowering and irresistible. In the late '70s, while we were still in high school, he began working at Boston's WBCN, then one of the top rock stations in the country. He started out as a volunteer on the station's acclaimed Listener Line, then transitioned to the Music department and ultimately became WBCN's Music Director by the time he was 20.

Jimmy was as generous with his opinions on new bands he loved (Cheap Trick! The Dictators! The Motors! Ultravox! The Stranglers!) as he was with extra promo records that WBCN received, and I was a willing and fortunate recipient of both during my last couple of years of high school. Jimmy and I stayed in touch through college -- in fact, he hired me as his assistant at Stiff Records' US office when he was doing radio promotion. But we drifted apart after he moved out West, and to my great regret we were no longer in touch when he passed away in 1986 due to AIDS-related complications. He was only 25.

His influence during those formative high school years has stayed with me to this day: many of the bands he introduced me to are still among my favorites, and I'd like to think that my own passion for seeking out new music and playing it on the radio is at least partly due to being friends with Jim back then.

As I've written here before, there have been countless times that I've wished Jimmy was still here so I could tell him about a great new record I'd heard, or he could tell me about his new favorites. I'm grateful that I have the opportunity to go on the radio every week and share my favorites with you. If you like what you hear, take a moment to say "thanks" to Jimmy Mack for shaping my musical taste for a lifetime.

Evening folks. Tough news today from WFMU
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13pm
coelacanth∅:

is it really true? i haven't been able to find any word about Wm. Berger checking out, all day, from any source - and it's easily believable that certain people at wfmu would play a "joke" in such poor taste.

sadly 100% true.

You know, this week at WFMU is really death week:

• Monday: Dave Hill’s guest is a woman who basically helps people do pre-death planning.
• Tuesday: The sad and unexpected news of William Berger’s passing.
• Wednesday: This tribute show.

Not saying anything of this in criticism or anything negative. But wow… What a death week!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20pm
aratuk:

There probably will be some mention of it soon. People have to wrap their heads around it and come up with something appropriate to say.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20pm
efd:

@coel I believe there are family-related reasons why nothing has been posted yet. I would expect to see something tomorrow.
  9:20pm
JakeGould:

@coelacanth∅: It’s not by accident it’s not mentioned on the homepage. William’s son apparently hasn’t been told yet—at least as of this afternoon—so nobody is in denlal at what happened, but outside of mentions on the playlists and maybe a vague dedication on air, the station is respecting the family’s wishes to be low key for now.
  9:21pm

That,s a wonderful tribute, Evan. I am so sorry to hear of Bill Berger's passing. Wow.

Wm Berger was a true scholar of music and I would sit up whenever he got on the mic. Lots of peeople don't know that he was the music director for the station before Brian Turner. Ken said today that William was the first person he hired at WFMU. I'm just gutted that he is gone as he and his show were such a reliable fixture of my week.R.I.P.
