Charles Mingus said jazz was a word invented to separate musicians from their money. Music for a Free World brings us together, drawing listeners to the healing power of smooth free jazz. Each week, surprise guests bring their own sides to spin and their instruments of choice to spontaneously jam.

Yes, it is VERY weird. This show is connecting to the stream by the same method as every other show. Exactly the same. I will alert the authorities.

Rex's show comes in loud and clear on both laptops, with all 3 (incl.aac) modes.

You may have just solved the problem. Or, maybe not. I will confer with Dave after the show about adjusting that.

Which I wish we could just switch to everywhere, because it nearly always sounds better than MP3 at the same bitrate (sounding great, Dave!), but unfortunately there are some existing software bits which expect nasty old MP3.

coelacanth∅:
...but, is it possible to put an aac link next to the mp3 link on the playlist page? i'm thinking with that link my winamp would've played it. (after said pause)

If only one stream codec is in use, so far we've been sticking with MP3 because it's a "least common denominator" choice which basically everybody seems to be able to play.

Bandcamp is the first place I look for music these days, because
(a) I assume that the artists get a better cut from Bandcamp sales than sales which have had to squeeze through more layers of middlemen to get to other retail channels – but we have actual working artists here, it'd be great to hear if my assumption is correct; and
(b) You can get nice lossless FLAC downloads, because who would want to listen to lossy compression like MP3 or even AAC when playing your own copies of music at home?

We could try to transcode in the cloud, but that would be complicated and quite possibly not meet the quality goals either.
I was able to add an additional high-quality AAC stream (and it was my initiative, because of how much better it can sound) for all the shows streaming on the main WFMU channel, because all of those streams originate at the station from devices I maintain, so the setup is something I could handle myself.
We don't have that luxury with remote alt-stream shows. It's a miracle these bumblebees can fly, I don't want to weigh them down with cargo pouches.

And welcome to WFMU playlists, where sometimes (often) the discussion is about something other than the music.
But we're all listening!
