Favoriting May 8, 2019: VIVIEN GOLDMAN interview about her new book Revenge Of The She-Punks: A Feminist Music History from Poly Styrene to Pussy Riot

Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop-up player!

Author/Musician/Educator Vivien Goldman, sometimes known as "The Punk Professor," joins Evan "Funk" Davies to discuss her new book Revenge Of The She-Punks (University Of Texas Press). The book, subtitled "A Feminist Music History from Poly Styrene to Pussy Riot," covers female punk musicians around the world from the mid-1970s through the present day — a subject she is acquainted with personally thanks in part to her classic 1981 tune "Launderette." Goldman will be appearing at McNally-Jackson bookstore on Prince St. this coming Sunday, May 12, at 3pm.

Off to an excellent start!

ultradamno:

I once saw the Boston band Wild Stares with a bit of the flu. One of them asked what bands I liked. I mention X-Ray Spex. They mocked me. "I had a crush on Poly Styrene in high school, too but come on". I coughed on him.

Good move, ultradamno. I am excited for this show!

same thing happening with Little Nas X and country music...exclusion/territorial attitude.
Avatar 9:59pm
herb.nyc:

Chris Stamey's "a spy in the house of loud" is on university of Texas press too. w soundtrack as well. / exclusionary, sez Evan. A clerk at Free Being made fun of me when I brought up Toy Dolls, looooong time ago. / punk is simple, sez Vivien. The Met "camp" show sure was a turnoff, for me.
